Nicholas Sauer grew up in Barrington attending elementary, middle and high school in District 220. As a student he was active in many clubs, sports and fine arts programs.
After graduating from Barrington High School Nicholas attended the University of Denver. While at DU, Nicholas developed a passion for public policy, service and community involvement. As a policy student he studied under the guidance of former Colorado Governor Richard Lamm. Serving as an influential student leader, Nicholas worked with the University President to develop a professional mentoring program between students and alumni. In addition to his studies and leadership responsibilities in college, Nicholas served as a tutor to students in need at a local elementary school.
After graduation Nicholas went to work for the University President who had decided to run for Governor. At the age of 22, knowing no one in Colorado other than his college friends, Nicholas was put in charge of mobilizing campaign supporters in more than half the state. Within a few weeks, Nicholas had created teams of eager volunteers, donors and supporters. The campaign raised more money than any other in state history, his candidate was a household name. During this time, Nicholas reaffirmed his desire to serve the public and make good change community by community.

Next, Nicholas moved to Washington, D.C. and began work as an assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Carlos M. Gutierrez. In his position, Nicholas helped arrange the Secretary’s travel and advanced many of his trips. In this capacity Nicholas received a first hand education into the inner-workings of national government, world economies and international politics. In addition he worked for the Office of Services at the Department of Commerce. In this role, Nicholas managed a team of 44 civil servants, helped establish department priorities and monitored a budget of over $1.5 million.
Nicholas is now a partner in Scarsdale Marketing a family run sales firm in the Barrington area. The company designs and sells custom and stock kitchen cabinets for the Chicagoland area.
In April of 2009, at the age of 26, Nicholas became the youngest person ever elected to the Barrington Community Unit School District 220 Board of Education. As a School Board Member, Nicholas is committed to effectively preparing every student for the future. He supports more individualized learning, new technology and enhanced curriculum. Nicholas believes strongly in the importance of surrounding children with superior teachers, communicating effectively with residents and maintaining sound fiscal management practices.
In addition to his role as a School Board Member, Nicholas serves on the school district’s Policy Committee, as board legislative liaison and as a representative on the Strategic Planning Committee. Locally, Nicholas is involved with Citizens for Conservation, the 4th of July Parade Committee, The BHS Theater Project and The Barrington Area Masters Swim Team.
Nicholas currently resides in North Barrington and is finishing his Masters in Public Policy and Administration at Northwestern University.
